https://tablanaari.com/NIMAD is a critically acclaimed world music ensemble and immersive audio-visual musical experience created by multi-instrumentalists and co-founders Bharat Chandore and Jayesh Malani. The project brings generations-old folk music, traditions, stories and cultural sounds from the Nimad region of Madhya Pradesh, Central India, into a contemporary musical and visual language.
NIMAD explores the relationship between Nimadi folk music, Indian folk traditions, world music, contemporary composition, cinematic arrangements, storytelling and visual art. Rather than simply reproducing traditional folk music, the project reimagines the sounds and cultural memory of Nimad through arrangements that incorporate influences and textures from around the world.
The NIMAD live show is conceived as an audio-visual journey and live documentary, taking audiences into the history and traditions of the folk musicians whose musical practices form the foundation of the project. The performance brings together folk musicians, a horn section and a qawwali group, creating a layered ensemble sound that connects regional Indian folk traditions with contemporary world music.
The visual dimension is an integral part of the experience. Directed by Warren De Sylva with visual direction by Keerthi Raju, the live production incorporates projection mapping, synchronized visuals, particle animations, scrims and cinematic visual layers that interact with the music.
At its core, NIMAD brings together folklore, oral traditions, community, storytelling, music, visual culture and contemporary performance, creating a format that can work within music festivals, cultural festivals, performing arts spaces, museums, multidisciplinary arts platforms and experiential events.
The project has been presented at the Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa and has performed in Mumbai and other locations, continuing its journey as a travelling musical and audio-visual experience.
Wobble Creative & Content is the official manager and curator of NIMAD, working with the project to present its distinctive combination of Nimadi folk music, Madhya Pradesh's cultural traditions, world music and immersive audio-visual performance to festivals, cultural institutions, venues and audiences.
